The Scrunchie Project

In the early days of this pandemic, masks were a must have, and they still are. However, they weren’t as abundant and many hospitals didn’t have enough. Knit Crochet with Love, a non-profit organization that makes chemo caps, started the project to make masks for healthcare workers. This project yielded fabric scraps which were repurposed to make scrunchies. That's how the scrunchie project came about, and the high school and college going girls from our community led the charge. Over 20 girls took part in this assembly-line style of making scrunchies and I joined the effort. We were all assigned roles; some cut pieces into rectangles, some sewed rectangular pieces to strips, others made strips into tubes, and the rest finished them off. My role was sewing strips into tubes and for some scrunchies, I added elastics too making my count 40 or so. I might consider more upcycling projects in the future since I had an amazing time with this one. Donations and funds raised from the sale were gifted to homeless shelters as the coronavirus has negatively influenced these communities.
